One of the main fibres used to make Spicysols garments is hemp. Hemp is a natural fibre that thrives in the Himalayan region of Nepal with minimal impact on the environment.
The cultivation of hemp requires less water compared to other natural fibres, due to its resistance to drought. Minimal, if any pesticides or insecticides are required to produce hemp due to its incredible resilience against bacteria, mould or mildew.
Our hemp is grown in the Himalayan region of Nepal, at upper middle altitudes of 1,500 - 3,500 metres elevation. Nepal's mild climate, high elevation, and diverse ecology are considered as optimal conditions for hemp farming.
Villagers have harvested and processed hemp fibres for centuries to produce mats, bags, ropes, clothes, and much more. The abundance of widely available hemp has long since provided villagers with an income, and have enabled them to be self-sufficient.
Why hemp?
- Hemp is environmentally friendly and uses approximately 20% less water and creates almost three times the amount of fibre per acre than cotton
- Minimal pesticides or herbicides are required for hemp cultivation
- Hemp is strong and durable, yet comfortable and breathable to wear
- Skin-friendly, hypoallergenic and antibacterial, sweaty and odour-inhibiting
- Hemp is a natural moisture regulator
- Hemp fibres are moth-resistant and flame retardant
- Similarly to cotton, hemp fibres get softer with prolonged use
- Because it is a natural product, at the end of its lifecycle hemp fibres are completely biodegradable
We work with local talented individuals in the Kathmandu Valley, who receive a fair wage for their work and flexibility with their schedules. Some women prefer to work from home due to childcare and family commitments, with the raw materials delivered to their homes and the finished products picked up to then be worn and loved by you!
